Herbs: A Summer Grilling Game Changer

by Don Roth

So, you’re ready to grill. Time to gather supplies! Cold beer? Check. Summer playlist? Check. Cinnamon sticks…huh?

We think that grilling should be about more than just burgers and pork. It should also be a sensory experience! And while good smells come standard to most grills, epic aromatherapy takes one simple addition: herbs. Not only do herbs create aromas that will make you want to rev up the Weber every day of the week, they offer unique grilling benefits, too.

Here are three ways herbs can make your BBQ even better:

1. Sage + Rosemary (a.k.a The BBQ bomb)

When met by a flame, a handful of sage and/or rosemary creates a fragrant smoke with a trifecta of perks:

1) adding subtle flavor to your food

2) smelling heavenly

3) acting as a natural bug repellent

For best results, soak your herbs in water for a few minutes first and then lay them directly onto the coals while they’re still damp. Once you’ve BBQ-bombed it up, proceed with grilling as usual.

2. Cinnamon Skewers

Want a flavorful alternative to the standard wood and metal skewers? Try cinnamon sticks! We recommend using them to make fruit kabobs. First, puncture pieces of pineapple, peaches and nectarines with a metal skewer and then layer the pieces onto a cinnamon stick. Grill until the fruit begins to caramelize for a sweet, unexpectedly spicy treat. Bonus:You can also use cinnamon skewers for meats. For details, head over to Open Cookbook.

3. Bake It In

Marinades are all well and good, but did you know you can also infuse your meat with herbal flavor? Softer herbs like mint, oregano and thyme are best cooked in close quarters with your meat for maximum flavor infusion. Snip them into sprigs and rinse carefully. Then, place the pieces of herbs onto a sheet of aluminum foil. With the herbs in place, add your meat and/or vegetables to the foil along with olive oil or butter and wrap them tightly in the foil before grilling.

Wanna Make Life Easier? 10 Things to Toss Today

by Don Roth

Real talk: How many coffee mugs does one household need?

You probably started out with one or two go-to mugs. But time flies, and all of sudden, your pantry is overflowing with kitsch coffee mugs. Those mugs may seem innocent enough, but clutter can be a serious source of stress.

If clutter is stressing you out, you don’t need to overhaul your entire house. Start with repeat items. These are the things you really only need one or two to function, but somehow own ten.

Not sure what we mean? Here are a few extraneous items to toss today:

1. Books You’ve Read

This one may be controversial, but hear us out. Although it’s easy to get attached to your favorite stories, books can quickly equal clutter, dusty shelves and wasted space. Share the knowledge and donate your read books to schools or used bookstores. Then, give your local library card some exercise. Bonus: If you switch to borrowing from the library, you’ll save some cash, too.

2. Reusable Shopping Bags

Assess what you really need. If you generally leave the grocery store with three bags, keeping four is appropriate. Once you exceed four, you’ve entered the scary-pile-shoved-under-the-sink phase. Avoid that at all costs!

3. Vases

Unless you have a constant supply of cut flowers coming into the house, a cabinet full of vases will likely never come in handy. Pare down your collection to the vases with sentimental value and toss the rest.

4. DVDs and CDs

In the era of Netflix, these guys have basically become irrelevant and can take up a lot of space. If you watched or listened to it 20 times, and you’re ready for 20 more, you should keep it. If you’re likely to never use it again, away it goes.

Don’t want to say goodbye to your collection but are interested in having more space? Try downloading the movies & MP3s onto an external hard drive.

5. Coffee Mugs

When it comes to dishware, we recommend having enough for one week, and then it’s time to do the dishes. So, if you drink coffee every morning, save your favorite seven mugs and donate the rest.

6. Magazines

Limit your magazines to the coffee-table collection. Keep the most recent issues available and make a one-for-one trade when you pick up a new read.

7. Tech Clutter

Audit your desk or junk drawer for duplicate cords, chargers and that phone you used ten years ago. Once you’ve trimmed your collection to only the necessities, organize your tech clutter.

8. Toys

Whether they are for your child, your pet or your niece that comes over on occasion, keep the collection fresh. Only hang on to the most sentimental and recent additions to the toy collection. Depending on how often the toys are being used, choose a fair number of toys to be the base of the collection, and then adopt the one-in-one-out policy.

9. Linens

Limit yourself to two sets of sheets and towels. This will save space in your linen closet and won’t let laundry pile up. Plus, you’ll stop holding onto old, dirty linens “just in case.”

10. Tupperware

The days of saving old takeout food containers are over. Keep only enough Tupperware for one week’s worth of lunches. If there’s a certain type of Tupperware you prefer, limit your collection to only those and recycle the rest. Tip: Using only one type of Tupperware will make it easier to keep it organized.

7 Things You Should Have in Your Bedroom

by Don Roth

You’re going to spend about 200,000 hours of your life in your bedroom. Just to put that in perspective, get this: if you spent all that time walking instead, you’d circumnavigate the earth 25 times.

But, since you’re not Forrest Gump, and will be snoozing all that time, you might as well have an awesome bedroom! Here are seven things you need:

1. Artwork, Placed at 57” from the Floor

A bedroom without artwork on the walls is like a blank canvas of boring. If your bedroom is lacking, it’s time to change that. Almost any type of artwork will do, except for family photographs – this is actually a feng shui no-no! When it comes to bedroom decor, family photographs are considered too “emotionally charged,” and can disrupt intimacy.

Tip: Hang each piece of artwork at 57" on center, meaning the center of the artwork is exactly 57” from the floor. For more tips, read about how to properly hang and frame your artwork.

2. A Comfortable Rug

Sinking your toes into a cushy rug can make any morning awesome. Basically, if you don’t have a rug in your bedroom, you’re missing out. If you already have carpet, but it’s not as luxurious as you might have hoped, add a smaller, plush rug by the bed.

3. A Place to Sit (That’s Not the Bed)

Extra seating is good to have in your bedroom for a few reasons: it can be a place to read (that’s not the bed), a place to put on shoes, check your email in the morning or even just have a conversation with your partner that you’d rather not have in bed.

If you’re tight on space, consider getting a storage ottoman (that doubles as a seat) or a small, upholstered bench at the foot of the bed.

4. Quality Bedding

During sleep, your body is working to support healthy brain function and maintain your physical health. Basically, a good night’s sleep is really important, and nothing helps you sleep better than luxurious linens with a high thread count. If you’re overdue for an upgrade, but not sure where to start, read this guide on navigating the different bedding types in most home goods stores.

5. The Right Scent

Whether you prefer candles, reed diffusers or all-natural air fresheners, a fresh-smelling bedroom can go a long way when it comes to enjoying this space. We recommend tryinglavender linen spray for a mellow, floral fragrance. Bonus: Lavender can actually improve your sleep. (Yes, really!)

6. A Full-Length Mirror

Not only will a full-length mirror let you double-check your outfit every day, adding a large mirror to the space will help make your bedroom feel more spacious.

7. Wall Hooks or Shelves

There is nothing more valuable in your bedroom than vertical wall space (especially if your room is lacking in square footage). Add wall hooks or shelving to hold scarves, jackets, books, plants and whatever else you want to display in your bedroom.

The 5 Best Things to Buy in August

by Don Roth

Ah, August. This hectic month is jam-packed with back-to-school obligations and last-minute barbecue invitations. But did you know it’s also a great time to save some cash?

Sure, school supplies are on sale this month, but August is full of awesome deals for the home, too!

Here are five things you can buy on the cheap this month:

1. Outdoor gear. Stores make it a high priority to get rid of outdoor gear before the temperatures drop, and this includes everything from patio furniture to grills to lawn mowers.Tip: It’s best to wait until the end of August to purchase outdoor furniture. Retailers like Sears and Home Depot will discount patio sets by as much as 90 percent!

2. Storage containers. Stores tend to cater to the new college crowd during August. That means they’ll mark down the value of dorm supplies, especially storage containers and organizers. In the market for some new under-the-bed storage drawers or maybe some space-saving bins for your bathroom? Now is the time to buy.

3. Linens. If you’re looking to restock your linen closet, August is the best time to do it! Not only are college kids shopping for new bed linens, many shops are also trying to purge their summer sheets to make room for heavier fall and winter gear. You can expect to find linens, duvets, pillows and blankets at a discount price.

4. Kids clothing. If your little one’s jeans have seen one-too-many grass stains this summer, jump on the back-to-school bandwagon! Clothing retailers have widespread sales on kids clothing during August with markdowns as much as 40-70 percent off!

5. Office supplies. They may be under the label of “school supplies,” but don’t be fooled! Grown-ups need pens and pencils, too. If you have a home office (or just need some new envelopes) stock up on these supplies while you can. Tip: Need a new desk for your home office? Computer desks often fall into the “dorm items” category, so they’ll be cheaper this month, too.

The Risk in Waiting for the Fed

by Don Roth

Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen again addressed the question of the Fed and interest rates earlier this week. This go around Yellen suggested that an interest-rate hike was in the cards for later this year. We say “suggested,” because as usual Yellen made any rate hike conditional: When the economy can support a rate hike, in the Fed's opinion, then we will see a rate hike.

To be sure, a rate hike could be in the cards (though we remain skeptical), but it really doesn't matter. Interest rates have been rising with or without the Fed's imprimatur.

The yield on the very influential 10-year U.S. Treasury note seems intent on hanging above 2.35%. This, after it was hanging around 1.9% as recently as April. Mortgage rates, in turn, also seem intent on hanging around at a higher level. The 30-year fixed-rate loan continues to creep progressively higher. It's now comfortably above 4%. The 15-year fixed-rate loan has followed a similar trajectory. As the yield on the 10-year note goes, so goes longer-term mortgage rates.

The fact is that mortgages rates have moved higher without any prompting by the Fed. This point is worth underscoring. Many borrowers believe low mortgage rates will remain as long as the Fed continues to procrastinate on its first rate hike in nearly a decade. This is untrue. Interest rates in general and mortgage rates in particular can rise without any input from the Fed, as we've seen in recent months.

Nevertheless, many borrowers believe time is on their side. Until the Fed announces a rate hike, low rates are here to stay. That's a dangerous mindset, because there is nothing to stop credit markets from supplanting low interest rates with high interest rates. What's more, there is nothing to stop the market supplanting rates much quicker than most people expect.

Where Does the Fork Go, Again? How to Set a Table

by Don Roth

You’ve ordered the turkey, you’ve picked your side dishes and your family has finalized their travel plans. The holidays are almost here! If you’re going to spend the hours (and cash) necessary to cook the perfect holiday meal, why not take a few extra minutes to make sure it looks nice on the table, too? Cranberry sauce eaten on your good china with your real silver tastes at least twenty percent better. We promise.

It’s easier than you think to impress your guests with a proper place setting – just follow these simple rules. And remember, no elbows on the table!

Photo: Cake with Giants

Start with Plates

Use your plates as anchors for the rest of your setting. Make sure they’re far enough apart so your lefties and righties won’t be bumping elbows. A good rule of thumb is to leave about two feet of space between plate centers. If possible, make sure they’re evenly spaced. Note:Salad and bread plates go above and to the left of the dinner plate.

Next Comes Glassware

Drinks may not get the spotlight during the holidays, but they’re still an important part of your feast. Water glasses go to the right of the plate and wine glasses go to the right of the water glass (all still on the right side of the plate). If you’re going to be serving coffee after dinner, don’t break out your coffee cups until it’s time for dessert!

Then Forks, Spoons and Knives

Place your silverware in the order of its use, from the outside in. So your first course fork (probably salad, right?) goes on the outside, and then your main course fork. If you can’t tell the two apart, remember that the salad fork is smaller. Forks should be placed on the left side of the plate, knives and spoons on the right (except for your dessert spoons – those go above the dinner plate). Place all your knives so that the cutting edge faces towards the plate, and make sure the bottoms of your utensil handles all line up.

Now Add Your Flare

By flare, we mean napkins and decorations. All of your napkins should go to the left of the forks. As for the cloth vs. paper napkin debate, we’ll let you pick your own side. The tradeoff? Cloth napkins are greener, but paper napkins make for a much easier clean-up job!

Defend Your Garden! Repel Bugs with These 6 Plants

by Don Roth

As the weather heats up, there’s no better time to start planting your garden. But before you choose your greenery and blooms, consider some of the added benefits certain plants can bring – namely, repelling insects.

Here are a number of plants that will keep insects at bay. And since no one minds a few butterflies hovering around the garden, we found some plants that will attract the fluttering beauties.

Lavender

This beautiful purple flower (pictured) not only looks attractive, but smells just as sweet. Thankfully, it wards off mosquitoes, a nice benefit for any patio or outdoor entertaining space.

Citronella

Also known as West Indian lemongrass, OneKingsLane.com says this tall plant is an excellent mosquito deterrent. It’s especially potent when paired with two other mosquito fighters – catnip and cascading geranium.

Spearmint

Ants aren’t so terrible, but if you want to guard your home from the little guys, try spearmint. According to InfoBarrel.com, a border of spearmint around your garden or house can deter large groups of ants.

Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemums may be especially good at keeping cockroaches, ticks, bedbugs and fleas away, says InfoBarrel.com.

Basil & Rosemary

Two more herbs that are excellent insect repellents are also wonderfully fragrant. According to TLC.com, basil keeps away flies and mosquitoes, while rosemary keeps mosquitoes away as well. Bonus: Rosemary can help keep cats away from your child’s sandbox, as cats are turned off by its smell.

Create an Organization System for All Your Clothes

by Don Roth

WHY DO THIS?

A coat draped over the couch may not be a big deal, but a coat strewn on the couch, a few pairs of shoes on the floor and jewelry on the table adds up to something big: C-L-U-T-T-E-R. Instead of attacking clutter room-by-room, it can be helpful to attack a single type of item that contributes to clutter in a bunch of places. Clothes, in this case. Let’s organize!

HOW TO:

  1. Bedroom Closet

If your bedroom closet looks like something out of American Horror Story right now, then you should do a full audit and revamp. If it’s messy but not disastrous, you may just need to change your closet mindset. Try embracing this idea: Closets aren’t meant for storage. Yup. To actually keep your closet clean, you must think of your closet as a functional space. In other words, give your closet a job. Need more details? Here’s the secret to keeping your closet functional.

  1. Closet Shelves

Closet shelves are the Bermuda Triangle of storage spaces – items get put up there, and are never seen again. To keep your closet shelves from effing up your wardrobe, invest in some baskets. Give each basket a job (same as with your entire closet), like tie holder or scarf storage. Label ‘em up and don’t mix up the jobs! You’ll never lose a headband or tie again.

  1. Drawers

Throwing items in a drawer is a quick way to make a mess. Enter: Dividers, dividers, dividers. Measure your drawers and give them each a specific job (seeing a pattern yet?) like shirts, pants, lingerie and socks. Then, install something like these spring-loaded dividers so the drawers will stay organized with minimal effort.

  1. Shoes

Shoes count as clothes, right?! Plus, disorganized shoes can feel like they have a life of their own, and easily become strewn about the house. Keep ‘em controlled by playing the no-floor game. Once shoes hit the floor they tend to stay there and clutter up every room in your house. Instead, use tools like door organizers, plastic bins and cloth vertical hanging organizers. When you take your shoes off, keep them off of the floors and put them back in their allotted place. For more shoe organization tips, read: Organize Your Shoes.

  1. Jewelry

It’s easy to store your jewelry out of sight, and then forget about your favorites and never wear them! To display your jewelry without making a mess, set up some old teacups, hooks and pushpins in your bedroom. Now you'll be able to keep track of your jewelry, instead of taking off your rings and leaving them in any ol' room in your house.

The Huge Home Fire Hazard People Forget About

by Don Roth

Truth time: thousands of fires every year are sparked by a home fire hazard that is often overlooked… resulting in an estimated millions of dollars in property loss! What is this frightening fire hazard, you ask?

Lint in your dryer vent!

That's right, dryer lint seems pretty harmless, but it catches on fire really easily (there are 15,000 dryer fires every year in the U.S.). So, what can you do to make your house safer than it was before you started reading this post? Simple. Follow these four tips:

1. Always Keep the Lint Trap Clean

Don't ever run a load of laundry without removing dryer lint from the trap or screen. Large amounts of lint can always accumulate during a regular cycle.

2. Inspect Your Dryer Duct and Vent

Look for kinks, holes or other damage. Over time, dryer lint can build up and clog your dryer vent, reducing the airflow, backing up gases and creating a big fire hazard.

3. Clean Your Dryer Vent!

You can clean your dryer vent duct by vacuuming the back of the dryer, the dryer duct and the wall duct, but we recommend hiring a professional once a year to clean your dryer vent (prices vary by location, but generally it costs about $50). This will ensure you don't miss any spots overtime that create a dangerous buildup.

4. Practice Gentle Drying Habits

To reduce buildup from general usage, limit your use of dryer sheets, and try to avoid running a dryer for longer than 45 minutes.
